What this movie lacks in subtlety it more than makes up for in sincerity and emotion. Let's face it, if you don't love the play, you'll probably hate it, but if you're a fan of the show, you will eat this up and beg for more. Terrific.

This is worth seeing for Hugh Jackman's great performance--true Oscar quality. Cohen's scoundrel is notable also. Better singing voices would have helped many of the songs...not trying to be picky...but to many are plain bad.

Very emotional and faithful rendition of the theatrical piece. The live singing/acting is inspirational. The many closeups of dirty, bedraggled actors can be a bit much, but the overall atmosphere is splendidly wretched.

Probably the worst movie that will be running for an Oscar. The melodrama is completely pathetic, unnecessary and boring, Russel Crowe's character is mediocre and it seems that the dialogues were stolen from a mexican telenovela.

This film isn't for everyone, but fans of the stage version will not be disappointed. That being said-to the causal movie viewer unfamiliar with Hugo's timeless novel of the human spirit, it's a tedious, bloated, and exhausting 238 minutes.

If you can get past the wall-to-wall music that sometimes grates on you, the story is excellent, the emotion is good, and there are some fine musical numbers that will stay with you. So overall, I would highly recommend.
